Some
areas in Costa Rica still remain relatively liberated
of human presence, and can only be reached by boat
or airplane (no streets have been built there yet).
Boat travels are most enjoyable: mangroves, rivers,
canals, are surrounded by green, dense vegetation,
and travelers certainly enjoy the peacefulness and
quiet environment where human traces are left only
by the boats in the river, and rarely by one or two
wooden houses in the river banks.
Due to the remoteness of certain lodges, they include
the boat transportation in their package prices.
Places that can only be reached by boat.
Tortuguero
(Northern Caribbean): A two-hour trip takes
travelers through astonishing water canals with the
presence of the forests everywhere. The Tortuguero
National Park in fact protects these natural waterways,
and all lodges in the region are located along their
banks. Roundtrip ground and boat transportation from
San José is provided by the lodges, as well
as all meals. for boat transfers from Sarapiquí
to Tortuguero, passing by the San Juan River (Nicaraguan
Border).

Corcovado-
Drake Bay (South Pacific): On this 1 ½
hour boat ride from the town of Sierpe to the Drake
Bay is one of the most intense and astonishing.
The route goes from mangroves and narrow rivers,
to the mouth of the Sierpe River, where it meets
the Pacific Ocean. Blue seawaters, palm trees and
forests on the shores, and the imponent Caño
Island are part of the amazing landscape. With luck,
dolphins might accompany you during the ocean journey.
Hotels such as La Paloma Lodge, and Casa Corcovado
offer Air, ground and boat transportation to the
properties included in a package price. Meals and
specific tours are included as well.
One-day boat tours' sites include: Caño Negro
Wildlife Refuge (Northern Lowlands), Sarapiquí
River (Northern Lowlands), Palo Verde National Park
(North Pacific) and Corobicí River (North
Pacific). for more information on these one-day
